Swansea v Cross Keys Match Preview & Team News

By David Glastonbury | 16/02/2018

Cross Keys are back in action this Saturday when they head to St Helens to take on Swansea in the Principality Premiership.

With the frustration of last week’s postponed fixture against Bridgend at Pandy Park behind them Keys will need to continue their good run of recent results as they take on the Whites who have also being showing some good form of late. The Whites have seen off Bargoed and Aberavon in their previous 2 league games. They defeated Bargoed 2 weeks ago with a 22 points to 8 victory at St Helens before they secured an impressive 19 points to 7 victory at the Talbot Athletic Ground over the Wizards last week. Former Keys man, Owen Howe was crucial in securing that victory over the Wizards as he kicked 14 points via 4 penalties and the conversion of a Gareth Walters try.

Last season the two sides met on two occasions with Keys claiming comfortable victories in both games. In the regular ‘pre-split’ Principality Premiership fixture played at Pandy Park in September 2016 Keys cruised to a 43 points to 19 victory. Skipper Scott Matthews was the star of the show as he crossed for a hat-trick of tries adding to one each for Ieuan Jones, Mathew Powell, Owain Leonard and Josh Skinner. Ethan Davies also kicked 4 conversions for Keys. The Whites replied with tries by Phil Jones, Ryan Evans and Richard Williams with a conversion each for Jones and Julian Mogg. In the tier 2 fixture played at St Helens last February Keys secured a comfortable 26 points to 0 victory. Lewis Barnett grabbed a brace of tries for Keys with Scott Andrews and Mathew Powell also crossing the whitewash. Josh Prosser added 3 of the 4 conversion attempts.

Turning back to this Saturday’s game and due to unavailability there are a total of 4 changes to the starting line-up compared to the side that was due to start last week against Bridgend. All 4 changes occur in the backs with the centre partnership changing as Lewis Barnett moves back to outside centre where he will partner Dragons’ centre Jarryd Sage who makes his Keys debut at inside centre. On the wing Barney Nightingale starts whilst Corey Shephard starts at outside half. On the bench Keys could hand a debut to back row man Ashley Gibson who has joined from the Dragons Academy having previously been with Championship side Pontypool.
