Cross Keys headed to Sardis Road in confident mood after the defeat of Llandovery last time out but were unable to stop Ponty from gaining the victory at their fortress-like home.
Keys started brightly with resolute defensive work stopping the home side from creating any sort of chances as they could not seem to get over the 22 to threaten the try line. The home side did, however open the scoring thanks to the ever reliable Dai Flanagan kicking a penalty after 8 minutes and another after 12 minutes.
Keys then enjoyed a good period of play and could have got the games opening try had they used the overlap but instead Keys got on the board with a penalty kicked by blood replacement Dorian Jones on 22 minutes. Flanagan then pushed Ponty further ahead with a 3rd successful penalty in the 29th minute. Keys then did get the opening try of an entertaining encounter thanks to good work by Elliott Jones who delivered the scoring pass to centre Leon Andrews in the 34th minute. Dean Gunter, back on the field after treatement was successful with the conversion on his old stomping ground. Elliot Jones then won a kick and chase race to get Keys second try of the game again Gunter successful with the conversion. Keys Ollie Hodge was sent to the sin-bin just before half time and Flanagan closed the gap with a fourth penalty as the half came to a close.
Half time score Pontypridd 12 - Cross Keys 17
Pontypridd began to make the advantage of having an extra man tell as good play led to Flanagan slotting over another 2 penalties early in the second half to regain the lead by the narrowest of margins. Just as Keys were about to get 15 back on the field prop Richard Cornock was sent to the dug out for 10 minutes for persistent infringements at the break down.
Ponty then got their opening try of the game thanks to flying winger Lewis I Williams, Flanagan adding the tricky conversion. Keys heads refused to drop and a driving scrum saw Scrum Half Ryan James cross the line for Keys, Gunter again successful to put Keys back to within 1 point of the league champions. Moving into the last 20 minutes the game was finely balanced and Keys looked set to get the lead back only for Lewis I Williams to intercept a wayward pass and sprint home for his second of the evening as the fog closed in around the house of pain. Flanagan added the conversion.
Keys were desperately trying to get something from the game but it was Ponty who got the clinical score in added time thanks to Carl Thomas who burrowed his way over.
Overall a really good effort from Keys but Ponty had just too much for the visitors to manage but plenty of positives coming from this game with the final score perhaps flattering the hosts slightly.
If the results wasn't enough of an upset, the injuries to Elliott Jones - fractured ankle, and laceration to Jamie Sollis's Calf resulting in him having 9 stitches , just added to Keys bad day at the office
