CROSS KEYS 20 - NEATH 13
Cross Keys won an entertaining game at Pandy Park beating in form Cardiff by 20-13.
Keys dominated the opening 40 and in truth should have secured a try scoring bonus point before the half time whistle. A number of chances went begging with Cardiff's defensive exploits keeping the score down.
Keys opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a Danny Hodge try, his quick tap penalty on the 5 metre saw him barge over when Cardiff seemed to think Keys would kick at goal. Dean Gunter adding the conversion. The longer time went on in the first half the more it looked like Keys would take the Blue and Blacks to the cleaners, Luke Ford, Jonathan Lewis and Nathan Trowbridge were all tackled by the last man.
Gunter added a penalty in the 36th minute before Danny Hodge got his second of the afternoon 2 minutes into stoppage time then Jonathan Lewis, an early replacement for the injured Aled James was the benefactor of a fine timed pass from Trowbridge and good work from Jamie Sollis inside his own half. Lewis scoring a try in the corner this time beating the last man with ease to cross, Gunter was unable to add the extras.
Half time score Cross Keys 20 - Cardiff 0
Cardiff must have had a very strict half time team talk as in the second half they looked as though they would emerge triumphant as they created opportunities which left Keys struggling for any ball at all.
Joe Griffin got Cardiff's first points of the afternoon with a penalty from in front of the sticks, then winger Steve Cullen crossed for a try in the 55th minute. Cardiff were hungry for more and continued to pile on the pressure and this time centre Cory Allen crossed the whitewash on the hour.
Luckily enough for Keys Cardiff started to waste opportunites just as Keys had done in the first half. Keys did have a couple of chances to get the all important bonus point late in the second half but will be more than happy with the win against one of the league's form sides coming in to this game and themselves get back to winning ways after last week's defeat at Llanelli.
Overall the first half was non-stop with Keys playing all the rugby which is pleasing but second half Keys were perhaps fortunate that the Blue and Blacks squandered some good chances.
