CROSS KEYS 35 - BRIDGEND 15
Keys opened the scoring thanks to two Dean Gunter penalties in quick succession, the first in the 3rd minute and second in the 6th minute. In the 13th minute skipper Rob Nash, turned from last week's villain to this week's hero with his sides opening 5 pointer of the campaign, Gunter adding the extras with a straight forward conversion. Gunter kicked his 3rd penalty of the game shortly after this.
Nash's back row colleague Jamie Sollis, who enjoyed a fine game throughout, crossed the whitewash after half an hour again Gunter adding the conversion. Ill-discipline seemed to have once again reared it's ugly head with Danny Hodge sin-binned for the second week in succession. As Hodge returned to the field Number 8 Adam Powell was also binned for a technical offence at a ruck.
The half time score was Cross Keys 23 - Bridgend 12.
Early in the second half Keys defence soaked up long periods of Ravens' pressure and this proved vital as Keys started to turn the screw heading down the slope towards the clubhouse.
Luke Ford got his first try for the club finishing off a move that seemed to involve most of the Keys players. Gunter this time unable to add the extras. It looked as though the bonus point would escape Keys' grasp as they failed to take a number of chances then had to defend their line as The Ravens threatened towards the close of play, hoping perhaps to get at least a losing bonus point for their troubles, with the score at 28-15.
Then Keys thanks to a clever box kick from replacement scrum half Jonathan Lewis which caused panic in the Bridgend defence, and Keys took advantage of this as once again a move involving much of the Keys team was this time finished off by Nathan Trowbridge, who started this season as he left last season with a try that secured the 5 points for Keys.
This was much, much better than last week as Keys secured their first win of the season in fine style. Still there are areas that need to improve which no doubt they will but it is vital to get that first W and to do it with a bonus point makes it even better. The standout players for Keys were Rob Nash, Jamie Sollis, Adam Powell and Luke Ford. However there was only ever one candidate for Man of the Match from the first whistle, that man was Gerwyn Price who seemed to be absolutely everywhere and enjoyed a superb all round performance.
